"Summer Twilight Tours" Wednesday Nights in June, July and August
Our "Summer Twilight Tours" keep the penitentiary open until 8 pm on Wednesday nights in June, July and August. Twilight Tours are exactly the same as tours on other days, but the penitentiary remains open later. Standard admission rates apply, and all audio tours, guided tours and artist installations will remain available. The basic audio tour path is about 45 minutes long.
In addition, special guide led tours are offered each evening. These tours are hands-on, interactive experiences, designed for visitors age seven and up. The tours last about thirty minutes, and are meant to supplement the Voices of Eastern State Audio Tour. Tours are limited to thirty people, first come, first served. Reservations are not accepted.
Left Behind, 6:15 pm
Hands-on presentation! Handle reproductions of everyday objects, photographs, and inmate crafts that survive from Eastern State's years as an active prison. What does each tell us about the lives of the prisons and guards?
Prison Uprisings, 7:15 pm
Inmates gathered to protest conditions they felt were unfair nearly a dozen times during Eastern State's history. A tour guide leads the group to the locations of the 1961 riot and other inmate uprisings.
Stay for dinner! Five of Fairmount's finest restaurants are featuring special themed dinner packages in combination with the Summer Twilight Tours.
